A very interesting advance of the festival has taken place at Container in Florence, during the night of 22nd and 29th january 1997, when under the exciting title of "All the images I would like to include in a poem" (sentence directly coming from Marinetti), a good amount of video-works have been broadcast, Mark Sutherland-Canada, Stathis Chrissicopulos-Greece , Bartolomè Ferrando-Spain, Jurgen Olbrich-Germany, Richard Kostelanetz-U.S.A., Experimental Poetry in Mexico (the first night) then Ivette Roman-Portorico, Nobuo Kubota-Canada, Xavier Sabater-Spain, Fernando Aguiar-Portugal, Vladan Radovanovic-Yugoslavia, Endre Szkarosi-Hungary (the second night).
A couple of nights really followed to understand the phenomen of videopoetry.
The real festival has been opened in the night of 12th april at 11 p.m. at Link in Bologna, in front of an overcrowed space (between 300 and 400 people) which has been focusing into all the performance until 1.30 a.m. . The beginning of the festival has seen a very impressive performance by Eric Andersen who has wrapped the whole space of the 'white room' of Link with the lights of slides, videos, fires, and all the necessary elements to create a charming atmosphere. Then the portuguese Fernando Aguiar, who thanks to his experienced performing work has provoked a continuous applause; especially appreciated the parts where the Lisbon poet develops the connection among words, objects and his body. The hungarian Endre Szkarosi ha based his work into his powerful, energetic vocality, really rarefied his oral work, redueced to the essential elements, where Ultrash (Enzo Berardi and Danilo Diggià), has totally occupied the stage with a very strong performance, full of hard tones, an evident homage to the violent theatre or the crudelity of Artaud who has surely been the inspirer of the same performance. The austrian Ide Hintze has proposed some rhythmical readings, based on a great support of music, and a suggestive stage presence, the top given by reading the chapter IV of Allen Ginsberg's Kaddish, (personal friend of Ide). The night has been closed beautifully by the catalan melodies, a mixed cocktail of drum-guitar-voice, of Xavier Sabater, coming from Barcelona.
The second night, S.Martino Theatre (the theatre od the University, DAMS), has been opened at 9 p.m., sunday 13th april, in front of an audience composed by almost 150 people, (the theatre was full up). Luisa Sax has started thanks to his erotic-linguistical sneers, pleasant and cheerful involvement of the audience, the polish Miroslaw Rajkowski has brought us towards a dimension of pure vocality, making his own body sound and sound again, Enzo Minarelli with the magic presence of Ares Tavolazzi playing contrabass and Barbara Kostner playing flute, has performed a perfect, exemplar poem about Northsouth&Southnorth, the portorican Ivette Roman (considering that she was pregnant of six months) has given an excellent performance, full of sensualism, tropicalism, with Valeri Scherstjanoi, russian, but living in Berlin since the Sixties, one has felt deeply the atmosphere of russian Futurism, finally Massimiliano Chiamenti has given once more an example of his extraordinary vocal qualities, and Massimo Mori has closed the night at his best with a typical performance of his creating an environment between sonority and objects.
The third night, again at S.Martino Theatre, has started at 9 p.m.
monday 14th april , again in front of a space totally full, especially
young students. The dutch Rod Summers has begun with a performance
recalling the icelandic sagas, the italian poet, from RomeTomaso Binga
(Bianca Menna) has proposed his performances based on linguistic puns,
nonsense, although all that related to an enagaged field, the icelandic
Magnus Palsson has performed an interesting piece between poetry and
theatre inspired by a short story written by Italo Calvino, the group from
Turin, Voci, has performed some poems where the polyphonetical approach
was more important than the meaning itself, Giuliano Zosi, professor
at Conservatorio di Musica in Milano, has worked with his usual skilness
and phonetical wisdom, with his poems aiming both at politics at linguistics,
the canadian Mark Sutherland has performed aggressively from a phonetical
point of view, exploting a jazz or a blues rhythm, whereas the canadian-japanese
Nobuo Kubota with all his studies about Zen, has proved skilfully
how the body can be a powerful instrument, as his performance was made by
all the possible sounds or noises whihc the mouth can produce; at the very
end of the festival the couple Sutherland-Kubota has improvised a
piece of sound poetry, whihc is a real unique event.
Also the greek Stathis Chrissicopulos has taken part to the festival.
The final day of the festival, monday 14th april, workshops have
been held about items of extreme importance for the oral research in the
field of sound poetry experimentation.
During the morning, the german Christian Scholz, expert and scholar
about sound poertry, has been presenting for a couple of hours a detailed
history of germnasound poetry, supported by slides and audiotapes, the swiss
Vincent Barras has lectured about glossolalia applied to these forms
of oral experimentation. In the afternoon, Nicholas Zurbrugg has compared
through an efficient paper the area of sound poetry in U.S.A. and Great Britain,
giving many examples both at the video and audio tape, finally Enzo Minarelli
has oficially presented the latest issue of the Baobab review, the Sonorous
Europe, totally about the sound poetry experience in Europe, six hour-listening
with a booklet including scores, photos and essay..
The festival has been followed by the italian national and regional press, by the radio (Italia radio, Radio Città del Capo), and by Rai RadioTre with a special one-hour program about the event, broadcast the 18th sunday may at 11 p.m..
Wednesday 16th april, at Container in Florence, from 10 p.m. there has been the fourth day of the festival only with a selected group of poets: Mark Sutherland, Nobuo Kubota, Massimo Mori, Enzo Minarelli, Ivette Roman, Miroslaw Rajkoski.
At the end of june, there will be six hour-listening program, inside the festival of poetry in Genova:
